CEFCU Pledges $50,000 to Plaza Project

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

Today, the Morton Economic Development Council announced that CEFCU has pledged $50,000 in support of the new Morton Downtown Plaza project.  Their donation will go to support the Veterans Memorial.

“CEFCU is proud to support Morton with this gift to dedicate the Veterans Memorial in the new Morton Downtown Plaza,” said Mark Spenny, CEFCU President and CEO.  “CEFCU has been providing financial services to Morton residents for many years, and has had a Member Center in Morton since 1994.  To provide the funds to establish the Veterans Memorial, and be able to recognize those individuals who have done so much to preserve our freedoms, is an honor for the Credit Union.   We know Morton residents will take as much pride in the Veterans Memorial as CEFCU does!”

The Morton Downtown Plaza will be located on the corner of Main and Washington Streets on a parcel owned by the Village of Morton.  The Plaza was designed by the Farnsworth Group, and includes shaded seating, a Veterans Memorial, play spaces, and public restrooms.  The Plaza is designed to draw people of all ages into Morton’s downtown district, reconnect and beautify Main Street, and offer infrastructure to support downtown events and activities.

“The Plaza will be a popular gathering space for our community,” said Jennifer Daly, CEO for the Morton EDC.  “It will also spur new business and residential development in our downtown district.”

A highlight of the new Morton Downtown Plaza is the Veterans Memorial, a space to honor those who have served our country.  The memorial was first introduced by members of the Morton American Legion Post 318 and Morton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5921.  The project was initially planned for a location on Birchwood, but was relocated when Veterans approached the Morton EDC and requested space in the proposed Downtown Plaza.

The Veterans Memorial will include flags and granite pillars symbolizing the five branches of our military.  The names of individuals who lost their lives in the line of military duty will also be recognized.  Pavers engraved in honor, in memory, or in recognition of someone who served will be laid as the flooring for this very special space.

“Bruce Brown with the Farnsworth Group and our local Veterans did an outstanding job designing the Veterans Memorial component of our Downtown Plaza” said Steve Aupperle, Member of the Veterans Memorial Committee.  “CEFCU’s commitment to this project will play a monumental role in helping us reach our campaign goal so we can build this beautiful gathering space for our community.”

The Village of Morton has committed $1 Million from its business district fund to support the construction of the Morton Downtown Plaza.  The Village is partnering with the Morton EDC to raise the remaining $1 Million needed to complete the project.

“It has been CEFCU’s pleasure to work hand-in-hand with members in Morton to help them achieve their financial goals,” said Terry Schultz, Morton Member Center Manager.  “And, we are pleased to now partner with the EDC to help achieve their goal of creating a plaza in the heart of downtown Morton.  How fitting that the Credit Union is able to recognize our 20th anniversary in Morton with this gift, which will be used to help establish a beautiful gathering place residents will enjoy for years to come.”
