Morton, IL - At the Morton Village Council Meeting last night, the Village Trustees approved the recommendaiton of the Business District Commission to allocate $70,000 from the Business District Fund to the Morton Economic Development Council for the purpose of hiring Chicago firm Houseal Lavigne to complete a Morton Downtown Plan.  The firm was one of 16 that submitted proposals to the Morton EDC.

"Four years ago, our citizens came together to share their ideas and vision for the community during the comprehensive planning process," said Jennifer Daly, CEO for the Morton EDC.  ""A concern echoed again and again was the deterioration of our downtown district.  The Morton EDC has embraced this challenge and is now ready to move forward with a plan that will serve the community now and far into the future."

Houseal Lavigne is an award-winning community planning, economic development, and urban design firm with extensive experience in downtown planning.  They will be partnering with Hanson Professional Services to complete the study.  "Of the 16 firms we reviewed, Houseal Lavigne was not only our group's unanimous favorite, but was also the second lowest in price," said Daly.  "We believe this firm will provide an outstanding product at a very affordable price for our community."

The downtown plan is expected to take 6 months to complete.  The scope of work includes everything from an extensive economic analysis to streetscaping, parking, and signage plans.  "This is far more than just a beautification plan," said Daly.  "This process will help our community decide what we want our downtown to be, what we can feasibly support, and how we reach that goal."

The Morton Economic Development Council exists to positively shape the future of Morton.
